  • To facilitate and support in the creation of an equitable justice system to improve relations between the legal profession and the public

  • To encourage a spirit of friendship and mutual support among the members
  • To create a networking forum for personal and professional development of the women lawyers
  • To promote and foster friendship and understanding among women lawyers of the world and other international professional bodies of women.


Current President

Mrs. Swarna Jayaweera

Sri Lanka Women Lawyers' Association - Ms. Lawrence Berney Alwis Mrs. Swarna Jayaweera is the President of Sri Lanka Women Lawyers' Association for the year 2019/2020 and she was elected unanimously at the Annual General Meeting of the Association held in December 2018.

She was enrolled as an Attorney-at-Law of the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka in the year 1988 and holds a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) from the University of Colombo (1986) and since that time she has worked at Sampath Bank PLC in the capacity of Senior Legal officer for over 16 years as in Charge of Legal Documentation Department and currently she is employed at Cargills Bank Limited as Senior Manager - Legal.

She had attended a Workshop on "Transformational Leadership" at Centre for Housing Finance, Lonavla, India in 1997 and she was also awarded a Certificate from the Bankers Training College, Reserve Bank of India, Mumbai in the Programme on Law Officers in June 2006.

She was awarded a Merit Pass in the Post Attorney Diploma in Banking Law & Insurance Law conducted by the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies affiliated to the Law College of Sri Lanka in the year 2004/2005.

Mrs. Jayaweera joined Sri Lanka Women Lawyers’ Association as a Committee Member in 2010 and held the positions of Assistant Secretary (2013/2014), Secretary (2015/2016) and Vice President (2017/2018). Throughout her involvement with SLWLA, she has worked to further the interests of women, particularly women from disadvantaged backgrounds. Her focus in 2019 is on providing support and development opportunities for women through seminars, legal aid clinics and awareness programmes.

She has participated in the International Federation of Women Lawyers' Conferences held in Philippines (2012), United Kingdom (2013) and Bangalore (2014)

She held the position of Assistant Secretary of Corporate Lawyers’ Association for the year 2011/2012 and she had published a Law Journal on the occasion of the 25th Anniversary of the Association as the Editor/Chairman of the Law Journal .
