Commeration Of International Women’s Day
The Seminar held on March 15th, 2024, to commemorate International Women’s Day was a resounding success, drawing attention to the crucial issue of empowering women and girls in the face of a culture of violence. The event took place at the prestigious Auditorium of the Organization of Professional Associations (OPA), located at No.275/75, Prof. Stanley Wijesundara Mawatha, Colombo 07.
The Seminar aimed to foster dialogue and action towards achieving gender equality and ending violence against women and girls. The esteemed panel of speakers included:
Hon. Justice Shiranee Tilakawardane: A highly respected figure in the legal arena, Retired Acting Chief Justice and Judge of the Supreme Court. Justice Tilakawardane's insights into legal frameworks and judicial responses to gender-based violence provided valuable perspectives
Ms. Sajeewani Abeykoon, AAL: Serving as the Director-Enforcement at the National Child Protection Abeykoon brought her expertise in child protection and legal enforcement mechanisms to the discussion.
WDIG Renuka Jayasundara: holding the position of Chief of Police in Charge of the Child and Women Abuse Prevention Division, WDIG Renuka Jayasundara shared frontline experiences and strategies employed by law enforcement to combat violence against women and girls.
The Seminar, which was scheduled from 02:30 p.m. to 04:30 p.m., provided a platform for attendees to engage with the speakers, exchange ideas, and explore actionable solutions to address the pervasive issue of violence against women and girls. Topics discussed ranged from legal reforms and enforcement strategies to community interventions and advocacy efforts.
The event not only raised awareness but also inspired concrete actions towards creating a safer and more equitable society for women and girls. Through collaborative efforts and united commitment, the Seminar aimed to contribute to the ongoing global movement for gender equality and women's empowerment.
