Awareness Program on Preventing drug use and addiction among children

An awareness program on "Preventing drug use and addiction among children" was held on 22nd March 2019 at De Mazenod College, Kandana.

Five Hundred students in the school participated for this program. The speakers were Deputy Inspector General of Police Deshabandu Tennakoon, Past President of Sri Lanka Women Lawyers Association (SLWLA) Mrs. Berny Alwis, Superintendent of Police Nihal Thalduwa and Mrs. Maheshi Maduwanthi from Dangerous Drugs Control Board.

The UN Convention and the Vienna Convention states about the rights of the children and the provisions that follow state parties deep concern about the children who are used in many parts of the world as an illicit drug consumers market and for illicit drug production, distribution and trade. States have an obligation to protect children from drugs. As the addiction for drugs among young generation in Sri Lanka is rapidly increasing, this program educated the children about the risks of drug use, the legal consequences and how drug use can negatively impact their plans, goals and dreams. "LET'S PROTECT CHILDREN FROM DRUG USE" was the theme of this project.

The Principle of the De Mazenod College Rev.Brother Janaka Fonseka, Deputy Principal Rev.Brother Pubudu Rajapakse, teachers of the school, President of SLWLA Mrs. Swarna Jayaweera, Vice President Mrs. Ruchira Gunasekara , Treasurer Mrs. Mihiri Fernando, Past Presidents and members of the SLWLA were present at this program.
