Awareness Program on Violence against women and girls

An awareness program on “violence against women and girls” was held on 2nd March 2019 at the main auditorium of Security Force Headquarters Jaffna in Palali. Sri Lanka Women Lawyers Association (SLWLA) organized this program in collaboration with Security Force Headquarters Jaffna in celebration of International Womens Day falling on 8th March 2019.

More than 300 Tamil Women and Girls living in Jaffna District and troops of 7th Sri Lanka Army Women’s corps participated at the event

Hon. Mrs. Sarojini Illangovan - Former District Judge of Jaffna, Mrs. RobinsaNakkeeran - Legal Officer, Legal Aid Commision of Jaffna, Mrs. Padma De Silva - Former President of SLWLA, Mrs. Nalini Kaneshayogan - Senior Attorney-at-Law and Mrs. Ruchira Gunasekera – Vice President of SLWLA Shared their valuable knowledge among the gathering.

Prevention on Domestic Violence, Divorce and the issues faced by the women migrant workers especially in the Gulf countries were the main topics of the speakers. Question and answer session was also held at the end.

On behalf of Major General Darshana Hettiarachchi , the Brigadier General staff Brigadier Priyantha Gamage , Cornel General staff- Cornel Silvester Perera and General staff Officer Ltd.Col.NishanthaMuthumala from Security Force Headquarters Jaffna and Mrs. Swarna Jayaweera President of SLWLA, Mrs. Ruchira Gunasekara Vice President, Mrs. KumuduAriyaratne Secretary, Mrs. Mihiri Fernando Treasurer and other members and past Presidents of the SLWLA were present at this program.
