55th Annual General Meeting - 2017/2018

The 55th Annual General Meeting of SLWLA was held on 10TH December 2017 at Nelum on the Edge – Waters Edge, Battaramulla. Hon. Mrs. ThalathaAthukoraka, Minister of Justice graced the event as the Chief Guest. Dr.Mrs. AnomaGamage, Deputy Minister of Petroleum Resources Developmentwas the Guest of Honour and Mr. U.R.De Silva PC, President of the Bar Association also graced the event as a Special Guest.

Chief Guest Hon. Thalatha Athukorale, Attorney-at-Law, Minister of Justice in her speech explaining the members that Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment is the eight Millennium Development Goals and that her government is committed as a government's priority to women's empowerment. She also said there is an ever growing interest in the law is seen from the number of women who enter the Law College and presently approximately 43% of the student population at Law College comprise women. She further said there are several areas in which the Ministry of Justice had intervened in the past in relation to women and brought in legislation, such as the Prevention of Domestic Violence Act and assured that the Ministry of Justice stands ready to support any progressive proposals for reform,

Mrs. Sandhya Thalduwa was re-elected as the President of SLWLA for the year 2017/2018.

The following Office Bearers were elected for the year 2017/2018.

• Mrs. Swarna Jayaweera and Mrs. Sandhya Wickremasinghe - Vice Presidents.
• Ms. Ruchira Gunasekera - Secretary
• Ms. Anusha Ranasinghe - Treasurer
• Ms. Ranusha Wijesinghe – Assistant Secretary

The following members were elected to the Executive Committee for the year 2017/2018

Mrs. Charmaine Madurasinghe, Ms. Priyadharshini Gunasena, Mrs. Mihiri Fernando, Mrs.Kumudu Ariyaratne, Ms. E.B.Shanika de Silva, Miss Pushpa Rupasinghe, Mrs. Nishani Lokuge, Mrs. Imali Weerasinghe, Mrs. Jayanka Kahawevithana, Mrs. Kanthi Kannangara, Ms. Erandathie Kuruppu, Ms. Sammani Warnakulasuriya, Ms. Rajika Silva, Ms.Prabha Chandrapala and Mrs. Dharshini Lahandapura.

At the invitation of SLWLA, the Guest Speaker Consultant Cardiologist, Dr. Vajira Senaratne made a presentation on awareness of "How to prevent Heart Attacks".

Ms. Geetha, Attorney-at-Law too made a presentation on "Peace Study Programme" and it was initiated by Attorney-at-Law, Mrs. Nalini Kaneshayogan.
